How to choose a great company name
Starting entrepreneurs and organisations who are thinking of new company names, project names or program names. I still see it happening in 2022: they have decided on a great name, but forget to see if there's a decent domain name available. 'I will do this differently', is what I thought when I started out as content chick in 2019, when my own company was just a dream.
How did Content chick start?
For years I'd been calling the social media girls I saw walking around at conventions 'content chicks'. So when I was brainstorming by myself about my company name, it was the first thing that came to mind. For unknown reasons, the domain name contentchick.nl was still available. So I claimed it instantly, just like contentchick.eu. Because I already knew that I wanted an English version of my website. Unfortunately contentchick.com was no longer available, so I can't expand to the USA anytime soon, *wink wink*.
Content chick at the Chamber of Commerce
After claiming the domain name contentchick.nl, I checked if there was already a company named Content chick registered at the Chamber of Commerce. That wasn't the case. After a few weeks of thinking and doubting, I decided to take the leap: I made an appointment to register my company at the Chamber of Commerce. Not even 2 months after claiming my domain name, it was time. At the magical date of 02-20-2020 I walked into the Chamber of Commerce with great confidence. They offered me a great cappuccino and the lady who picked me up, congratulated me on my choice of becomming an entrepreneur. 'What will be the name of your company?' she asked enthusiastically. 'Content chick', I replied with a big smile. She typed it into her computer and looked a bit worried. 'There's already a The Content Chick', she said, 'so you can't name it Content chick because it is too similar.' Did someone really claim my company name within my 2 months of decision making time?! The lady went on: 'Do you have a domain name?'. 'Yes!' I yelled relieved, contentchick.nl was in my pocket! 'You can name your company Contentchick.nl, is that an option?, she asked. 'I guess it will have to do', was my semi disappointend answer.
Domain name as a company name
I've never been in favor of using a domain name as your company name. I am someone who thinks 10 steps ahead and I seriously consider the fact that the .nl domain names might - at some point in the future - be of no significance. Also I don't think it looks very professionals to use a domain name as your company name. It kinda makes you seem like a desperate web shop with 50 product groups that claims domain names for all of these product groups. Of course that is a wise decision marketing technically . But as of yet, I am still just 1 content chick! And maybe, I might have some international ambitions where people won't understand why the .nl is in my company name.
Learning moment for starting entrepreneurs
This whole story is a nice learning moment for starting entrepreneurs. Because are you still doubting about starting your own company, going to the Chamber of Commerce, or claiming a domain name? Just do it! And be quick! Because before you know it, some other content chick might cut you off. And then you're writing a desperate SEO blog article to try and keep the number 1 organic position in Google with the word combination Content chick.
